This
film stays true to its title. I have seen all the spider-man films and wasn’t
always that impressed which is why I did not have high hopes for this film.
But, it blew me away and all I can say is, thank you Tobey Maguire for
retiring. Many of you may disagree but I thought Andrew Garfield was amazing as
just a regular high schooler and as a hero. What kind of stunk was the story
since there wasn’t anything new. It was the same old story we all know. I
disagree it’s the “untold story”, but they made up for that along the way.
Directed
by Marc Webb (how perfect), the film follows the story of Peter Parker (Andrew
Garfield), a science-kid still in high school who deals with getting picked on,
his inability to talk to girls, the loss of his parents, and oh yeah, becoming
a spider/superhero.
Parker
is raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Since his
parent’s disappearance, Parker continues to look for answers as to what
happened to them. After coming across revealing info, he is led to Oscorp and Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father's former partner. Connors is
trying to cure undetermined diseases and regrow lost limbs. Things go wrong
with the experiments which is where our villain comes in and it’s up to
Spider-man to help save the public from the evil plans the villain has in store
for them all.
I’m not sure
how essential it was to make another Spider-man movie but this one seemed brand
new and fresh. His origin story had way more details, we can relate to Garfield
better, and the shy, young love between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy (Emma
Stone) was more attractive to watch than the previous films.
There’s also a
modern-teenage-geek take on the whole story which makes you care about what
happens to the characters. If we are going to watch a film about some guy, I want
to know why. And Garfield was fantastic at telling us why. He made me laugh
too. They evened out the goofy/action stuff. I like comical breaks.
Another aspect
that will keep your attention: Spidey sure can fight. The action scenes were
intense and exciting. The graphics were a thrill to watch. This film had it
all. The only downsides are that the plot hasn’t changed much. That being said;
there are differences to give the film a little edge. It does take a little
time to get to the point because this film builds more on the characters than
previous Spidey films. Go see it because you’ll agree with me when I say,
he’s the only spider I
wouldn’t mind having crawl around.
P.S.
Before you run out of the theatre, stick around during the credits, there’s
something more you may want to see...
