Tron: Uprising
Premiere: June 7, 2012
Channel: Disny XD
3 out of 4 stars
If you hadn't already heard through sites like io9.com, there is a new series coming up on Disney XD. The story from Tron and Tron: Legacy is being continued in Tron: Uprising. The first full episode has been released on YouTube (posted below). The verdict so far? Promising.

The cast is pretty impressive. Original Tron cast member Bruce Boxleitner returns as Tron hinself yet again. Elijah WOod (Happy Feet, LoTR) stars as Beck, a young program who decides to take on the Tron mantle after Clu's armies take over his city and derez a friend. The cast is filled out with Mandy More (Tangled and who has turned out to be a solid actress), Nate Corddry, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Lance Henrikson (Millenium), Reginald VelJohnson and Paul Rubens.

The first episode does pretty good in setting up the basic premise, though the intro goes a little long for someone who's very familiar with the movies. A there are a couple of weeks spots in the story, but they're short enough. And the action sequences are very impressive. I do like how they have some characters being more grey hat then full on bad guys. But don't worry, the lead bad guy is as evil as you would want.

This is an animated show, but they've done a good job of mixing both traditional animation and CGI. The animation style is similar to anime, but distinct from it. It was very similar to the old Aeon Flux cartoons back in the 1990s on MTV, but cleaner. The design is gorgeous for anyone into futuristic design and meshes perfectly with the style of the original movies. The light cycles do return, of course, but some new vehicles to make an appearance.

There are some rough spots in the writing, but the animation is solid, the design is beautiful and the story they're creating offer some potential. I'd say this is worth checking at least for the first few episodes.
