The Chicago Casual Traveler: Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets, Michigan City, IN (LaPorte County)

Destination of the Day: Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets, Michigan City, IN (LaPorte County)

This is a real outlet mall - fewer luxury retailers with 'sale' prices, enclosed foodcourts with a Starbucks and sit down restaurants, or big display windows. No, this is the old fashioned rough at the edges kind of place with a massive power plant cooling tower in the background and some less-than-welcoming neighborhoods just to the east. For the power shopper the complex has over 120 stores, including Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren, Yankee Candle, and a South Bend Chocolate Cafe. If you are a transit user this is by far the most convenient outlet mall with the SouthShore station only a few blocks away. For a day trip the Blue Chip Casino is nearby and the city has a small, but nice, zoo.
