Summertime means garage sales, which means old VHS tapes for
50 cents. Recently, I saw a movie called A*P*E
on VHS at one of the garage sales and the cover looked like a King Kong type movie. I had to have it.
I watched it the other night and I have to say that was the best 50 cents I
have ever spent.
It’s an American/South Korean movie from in 1976 and
directed by Paul Leder. It stars Rod Arrants, Alex Nicol and Growing Pains’ Joanna Kerns. It is such
a dumb film but that’s what makes it great. It was purposely made to be stupid
because if you see it, you’d understand. It has been called one of the worst
movies ever made according to sources. It’s so bad, it’s good.
It follows a 36-foot-tall gorilla, which is basically a man
in the worst gorilla costume ever made. The ape escapes from an oil tanker in
Korea and heads for land. In his journey to the city, he fights a shark, which
many say is like Jaws. The scene of
him fighting the shark is like 15 minutes long and such bad acting you can’t
help but laugh. He starts kicking down buildings, smashing everything in sight.
The set is dollhouses and the man in the ape suit is stepping on small
children’s dollhouses, it’s fantastic. Like King
Kong, an actress (Kerns) in Korea is filming a movie and Ape finds her and
kidnaps her. The best is when Kerns is in his hand, the trademark for King
Kong. It’s a blonde Barbie doll in his hand. The fight scenes are so terrible. The
acting is atrocious. You have to see it to believe it.
Its poor special effects make it hilarious and actually
keeps your attention. It’s just a cheap and cheesy rip-off of King Kong with a little Jaws. You cannot take it seriously. Just
laugh and enjoy.
If you are looking to have a bad movie night, rent this. You
can actually get it from Netflix.
For a movie that was just so bad, it was good; I give it 4
out of 4 stars. It’s the greatest new addition to my monster movie collection.
