I
was very much looking forward to watching Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, and Jonah
Hill run around on screen killing aliens. I fulfilled my curiosity and my
verdict is that it was a love/hate relationship between me and what I watched
on screen.
It
sucked but I laughed. Vince Vaughn over did it, which sometimes he does but it
didn’t work here. Ben Stiller was entertaining and Jonah Hill was hilarious.
Knowing all three were doing a movie together, I figured it would be amazing.
It wasn’t. It was stupid, silly, but makes you laugh and has a fairly decent
plot. So, it wasn’t all disastrous.
Four
guys living in the suburb of Glenview, Ohio are looking to get more involved in
the community, meet new friends, and just full their days. They start
Glenview’s neighborhood watch. Evan (Ben Stiller) manages the local Costco and
is involved in a handful of clubs in town. Bob (Vince Vaughn) has a teenage
daughter that likes to wreak havoc and drive him nuts. Franklin (Jonah Hill) is
an emotional and crazy young guy living at home who was rejected from joining
the local police force. Jamarcus (Richard Ayoade) is recently a divorced guy living
in the burbs looking for some “happy endings.”
They
don’t do much at night while on watch duty except drink beer, play pool and
talk about genitals. But, then, random killings in town occur, people go
missing, you know the story. They then realize they have more to do on watch
duty. Aliens are invading their town. They feel it’s their job to get to the
bottom of what’s happening and stopping the aliens from taking over their town
and the world.
The
film does have a lot of plot holes. There really isn’t anything new here. The
science-fiction-comedy type movie has been done before so it was a nice try. It
was interesting they choose three huge names in the comedy family but it didn’t
go so well. Genital jokes and sex scenes can only go so far. It wasn’t all that
funny or intriguing to watch. Every time Hill came on screen I laughed. He
stole the show. And the people in the theater with me agreed. But any other
joke that Director Akiva Schaffer was hoping would make a chuckle, failed.
Yeah
it was one of those movies where the previews were actually funnier than the
film. It was a fun film for a few laughs on a Sunday afternoon but I won’t be adding
it to my DVD collection.
