This was trending on the newsite blastr.com. The effort to buy the rights to Firefly that was started by a comment from Captain Tightpants is cancelled by Joss Whedon.
According to the story on the Syfy run site, co-writer of the Dr. Horrible Sing-along Blog and Joss's sister-in-law Maurissa Tancharoen said in a tweet (and this is a direct quote) "Guys, no one in the Whedonverse is in support of http://www.helpnathanbuyfirefly.com/. Please save your money!"
She later qualfied it to say no one in the 'verse is opposed to it, but that no one is involved in any official capacity to actually have it happen. The guys running the site that was doing the fundraising had this response:
"According to Joss's sister-in-law, no one from the Whedon clan endorses the idea of a fan-funded organization trying to help. So, that's a wrap. We'll keep the site open as a memory for a bit and if any Whedons need to reach us, hit the button."
So... that's evidently... that.
